Should Solo Paddlers Use Video Analysis Too?

If you've read much of this blog, you've read about crews: seating charts, side specialization, twenty people trying to hold one rhythm. Fair enough — that's where most of our own paddling happens. But it leaves out a paddler who might need this more than anyone in a crew boat: the one training alone.

If you paddle OC1, surfski or kayak, most technique advice you'll find online is either written for a crew boat and doesn't quite translate, or is generic "core rotation" content that could apply to any sport. Here's what's actually different about training solo, and why video matters more, not less, when nobody's next to you.

Nobody's watching you fail quietly

In a crew boat, a coach on the dock — or twenty crewmates around you — provides a constant, if imperfect, feedback loop. Someone eventually notices if your catch goes soft or your rate creeps up. Training solo, that loop doesn't exist. A flaw can live in your stroke for a full season before anyone with a trained eye happens to see it, because nobody's there to see it in the first place.

This is the single biggest argument for filming yourself regularly if you paddle alone: video is a record the absent crewmate cannot give you. A clear clip lets you revisit both the opening strokes and the late-piece fade, while a poor angle or blocked joint can still hide either one.

What's actually different about solo technique

The same four view-supported measurements — projected outside-arm angle near the inferred catch, torso lean, stroke rate and rhythm — apply to a solo boat as a crew boat. True trunk rotation remains a coach-led observation rather than a PaddleLens number (we cover the distinction here). The physics of a catch doesn't know how many seats are in the hull. A few things do shift, though:

Rhythm is about you, not twenty people. In a crew boat, cadence consistency matters because twenty strokes have to land together. Solo, the same number matters for a completely different reason: it's the clearest early signal of fatigue. A rhythm that holds steady for the first two-thirds of a time trial and then starts wandering is often the most honest read on your actual conditioning — more honest than how your legs feel, which lie.

Stroke rate is a personal-best conversation, not a crew-sync one. Nobody needs your rate to match anyone else's. The useful comparison is entirely against your own history — is this month's sustainable rate at a given effort higher than last month's, at the same rhythm consistency?

Steering and balance change the picture, but not the stroke. A rudder, or the constant small corrections of an unrigged craft, adds motion that a crew boat paddler never deals with. It doesn't change what a good catch or a well-set hinge looks like — it just means you're doing it while also managing a boat that wants to wander, which is its own skill worth filming separately if you're working on it.

There's no one to blame the boat's speed on. In a crew boat, a bad piece has twenty possible explanations. Solo, a slow piece is legible in a way that's occasionally uncomfortable and consistently useful: your video is the whole explanation, not one-twentieth of it.

Filming yourself when there's no one to hold the camera

Everything in our filming guide still applies — fixed camera, true side-on, paddler filling the frame — but solo paddlers usually can't rely on a crewmate to set up the shot. A few solo-specific fixes:

  • A cheap tripod on a dock or pontoon beats asking a stranger to hold your phone. Set it up before you launch, angled at the stretch of water you'll pass through, and paddle past it on your way out or back.
  • If you train the same stretch of water regularly, mark the spot. A tripod aimed at the same 20 meters of shoreline every session makes month-to-month footage more comparable — which matters more solo, since you're the only data point in the comparison.
  • Film both directions if wind or current differ. A downwind pass and an upwind pass on a surfski or OC1 can look like two different paddlers; if you only ever film the easy direction, you're only ever seeing the easy version of your stroke.

The report doesn't change, and neither does the value

A PaddleLens report uses the same structure whether the video shows a crew boat or a solo craft: one practical focus, annotated frames showing the track, supported measurements beside them, and stored score history. Compare sessions only when the view and filming setup are alike; a changed score is not automatically proof that technique improved. None of that is crew-specific — it was built around the stroke, not the boat count.

If anything, solo footage can be the analyzer's cleanest case: one paddler filmed side-on, large in frame, with nobody in the way. That improves observability, but it still does not turn monocular phone footage into a defensible true-rotation measurement.
