Four Measurements and One Coaching Observation for a Paddling Stroke
Coaching language is famously fuzzy. Longer. Cleaner. More connected. Use your body. Every coach knows what they mean; almost no paddler hears the same thing the coach meant.
But underneath the fuzzy words, a well-filmed paddling stroke — dragon boat, OC1, kayak — contains a handful of useful observations. Four can become projected 2D video measurements when the view supports them. True trunk rotation cannot yet be measured defensibly from ordinary monocular PaddleLens footage, so it remains a coaching observation rather than a product number.
1. Outside-arm angle at the catch
What it is: the projected angle at the elbow of your lower (shaft) arm near the inferred catch. A phone-video pose model sees the body and hands; it does not directly detect blade-water contact.
What good looks like: many coaches use a nearly straight, but not locked, arm as the cue. PaddleLens can compare the projected angle with a coach-set range; 150–180° is a reference band, not a universal anatomical rule.
Why it matters: a bent lower arm at the catch means the stroke starts with a pull from the bicep — the smallest muscle in the chain — and it shortens your reach by the length you surrendered. The arm should arrive straight because the body delivered it there: rotation and hinge put the hand forward, the arm just holds the connection.
The tell: paddlers who bend early usually feel like they're being "quick to the water." What they've actually done is skip the front of the stroke.
2. Hinge
What it is: projected forward torso lean in the side view, referenced to a confirmed or detected waterline when one is available, otherwise to the image. Camera level and view matter to the number.
What good looks like: a clear forward lean, set before the blade drops and held stable through the front of the stroke. Coaches argue about the ideal number; everyone agrees it shouldn't be created mid-stroke.
Why it matters: hinge is stored range. If you sit upright at the catch, the only way to lengthen the stroke is behind your hip, where the blade mostly lifts water. Hinging late — diving as the blade enters — looks powerful but adds bobbing weight to the boat and arrives too late to add length.
3. Rotation — a coaching observation, not a PaddleLens measurement
What it is: how far your shoulder line turns relative to your hips — the chest opening toward the paddling side at full reach.
An ordinary 2D phone clip flattens the depth needed to measure that relationship reliably. PaddleLens therefore does not report or score true trunk rotation today. A coach can still observe it from complementary views; the software should not turn that observation into a precise degree value it cannot defend.
What good looks like: enough that someone on the far bank briefly sees your back. Rotation and hinge together create the reach; the arm just finishes it.
Why it matters: rotation puts the lats and the trunk behind the blade. It's also the difference between reach that costs nothing and reach that comes from the shoulder socket — the kind that ends in physio appointments. (We wrote a whole piece on this: what "rotate more" actually means.)
4. Stroke rate
What it is: strokes per minute.
What good looks like: whatever your crew can hold with full length — for club dragon boat crews usually somewhere in the 60s to low 70s; solo craft differ.
Why it matters: rate is the number everyone measures and the one most crews get wrong by treating it as a goal. Rate is an output: it should be the natural result of a full stroke and a patient recovery. Chasing a number produces short, scrabbling strokes that raise the rate and slow the boat. If two crews tie, the one at the lower rate is usually the healthier one — it has somewhere to go.
5. Rhythm (cadence consistency)
What it is: how much your stroke-to-stroke timing varies — the spread around your average rate.
What good looks like: tight. A metronome, not applause.
Why it matters: in a crew boat this is arguably the number that wins races — twenty people can only synchronize to a predictable beat. It's also the first number to decay under fatigue, long before technique visibly breaks. A paddler whose angles are perfect but whose rhythm swings is harder to sit behind than a rough paddler with a steady beat.
Using the five together
The order matters. Rhythm problems are often rate problems (too high to sustain). Rate problems are often length problems (short strokes force a high rate). Length problems are almost always rotation and hinge problems. And arm-angle problems are usually the symptom of everything upstream — the arm bends early because the body gave it nothing else to do.
So when you review video — your own or your crew's — resist fixing the first flaw you see. Find the most upstream supported measurement or coaching observation, work on one thing, and re-film from the same setup. Then describe what changed before deciding whether it improved.
