How to Film a Paddler So the Numbers Mean Something
Every coach has done it: someone films the boat from the chase boat, everyone huddles around a phone afterwards, and the conversation goes "see, right there — you're late" while the person being coached squints at a shaky, distant blur of twenty moving bodies.
The problem usually isn't the phone. Modern phone cameras can provide useful technique evidence when the paddler is large and clear in frame. The problem is how we film. Whether a clip gets reviewed by a coach's eye or by software following visible joints across usable frames, the same footage mistakes destroy the information you're trying to capture.
Here are the six rules we've settled on after a season of testing what actually produces measurable footage — and why each one matters.
1. Fixed camera. Not handheld, not from another boat.
This is the single biggest improvement, and it's the one most people skip.
A camera in someone's hands on a moving support boat adds two kinds of noise at once: the tremble blurs joints frame to frame, and the motion of the filming boat gets mixed into every angle you think you're seeing. A paddler who looks like they're rocking might just be your camera operator shifting their feet.
Put the camera on a tripod on a dock, pontoon, or the shore, and let the boat pass through the frame. If you must film from the water, use a gimbal. A still camera is worth more than a better camera.
2. True side-on, at torso height
Film perpendicular to the boat — a real 90°, with the lens level with the paddlers' torsos, not looking down from a bridge or up from a low bank.
Projected 2D angles are strongest and most comparable when you see the motion square-on. Shoot from the front quarter and a straight arm can look bent; shoot from above and body lean can disappear. Foreshortening is not a subtle effect, and no amount of slow-motion scrubbing restores depth the camera never captured.
One deliberate exception: a camera mounted on the boat, filming a paddler head-on, is a real setup of its own rather than a broken side-on. It measures a different plane of the stroke, side-to-side lean and shaft width instead of hinge and drive, and it only ever reads one clearly visible paddler. 3. Close enough that the paddler fills the frame
The paddler you care about should be at least 40% of the frame height. Zoom in or move the tripod closer.
A small, distant figure means low-resolution joints: elbows and wrists become a few pixels each, and both human eyes and tracking software start guessing. One paddler filling the frame beats a whole boat in miniature, every time.
4. Pick the unobstructed side
In a crew boat, film from the side where your target paddler is not hidden behind the paddler in front. Bodies overlap more than you expect from the bank.
Want to review both sides of the boat? Film two passes, one per side. Two clean 20-second clips are worth more than one five-minute clip where half the strokes are blocked.
5. Keep the horizon — and the boat edge — in frame
The far shoreline or the skyline behind your paddler is what tells the app which way is level, however you happened to hold the phone. That distant horizon is the honest reference for body lean and hinge.
Frame the shot so the background horizon stays visible behind your paddler, and the boat's edge stays visible under them, for the whole clip.
6. Steady paddling, 15–30 seconds, good light
Capture a continuous stretch of normal-effort paddling — not the start, not a sprint finish, just the crew's real rhythm. Fifteen to thirty seconds is enough for several complete stroke cycles.
Film at 30 or 60 fps in decent light, with the sun to your side or behind you. Strong backlight turns paddlers into silhouettes, and dusk footage smears fast-moving hands into ghosts.
The pre-record checklist
- Camera on a tripod or gimbal — nobody's hands
- Lens square to the boat, level with the paddlers
- Target paddler big in frame and not blocked
- Boat edge visible
- 15–30 s of steady paddling, sharp and well-lit
Tape it to the camera case. It takes 30 seconds to check and it's the difference between footage you can coach from and footage you delete.
What good footage unlocks
Rough footage may still tell you something, but it can also make a projected angle misleading. The time-based part of technique — stroke-rate consistency and side-view drive-to-recovery timing — needs enough continuous, stable evidence for the stroke signal to pass its checks.
That's true for your eyes, and it's true for software. PaddleLens reports tracking coverage: the share of sampled frames with a usable paddler track. That percentage is evidence coverage, not an accuracy score, and each metric can still be approximate or unavailable because of view, resolution, occlusion or too few clear cycles.
Film it consistently and you give the supported measurements a fair chance — without turning ordinary phone footage into laboratory motion capture.
